Thanksgiving - 4,000 views

Tue Nov 24, 2009, 3:27 PM
  • Mood: Thanks
  • Reading: this journal
  • Watching: abc news
I guess it's sort of become my tradition to do a journal entry for every 1,000 views I get. Today I passed 4,000. So a real big thanks to all my watchers and all the people who fav my work for all your support. I truly appreciate it.

In unrelated news, I am spending this week in Houston, having Turkey Day with the family. I have pretty easy access to the Internet where I am, but I'll probably be spending most of my time with the relatives. Can't promise fast responses over the next few days, so be patient.

By the way, for those of you who don't watch my scraps (don't feel bad if you don't; I don't watch anybody's scraps), I submitted a short animation test a few weeks ago that you can take a look at if you want at the following [link] . You have to download to view it.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm currently studying screenwriting in the cinema program at my college. When I get out of school, my ambition is to be a writer in Hollywood. My dream job, though, is working at Pixar.

Besides writing scripts, I'm also into drawing, cartooning, photography, composing, acting, writing poems and short stories... pretty much anything, actually.

And if anyone's interested, here are links to some of my original compositions. Just click download for the mp3.

Hi there A.J,

Here's this song I've been working on for awhile now. It has a combination of melodies that I've really wanted to use because it sounds great in my head...but it's so hard to recreate that sound with the resources I have. The biggest problem I'm dealing with right now is mid-range, I think it's very overpowering and sounds a little muddy .

This song has gone though many versions because I've never been happy with the way it sounded, so it's largely unfinished. But I'd love to hear what you think of it so far, whenever you have time :).

This is a very nice piece so far. I like the opening piano. My favorite part is definitely the last 30 seconds. It has a really nice rhythm to it and the instruments blend very nicely there. Some of the mid-section does get a little "muddy" as you say. I don't know what you'd do about it, because it sounds like what's causing it is the MIDI strings that you're using. Whenever you strike a note with them, it crescendoes in rather than going directly to full volume. That can sort of throw the ear off a little bit, because it gives the illusion that the strings are just a little bit off tempo from the other instruments. You could try turning the volume down on the strings a little bit to see if that makes it less noticeable, but I'm not sure.

Even despite that little issue, it's still a very good composition. I look forward to hearing the finished product.

I've been dealing with that crescendo problem for years. My piano has several string sounds, but that's the only one that sounds halfway decent (rather than computerized). But it has a horrible delay which I've learned to compensate for.

Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and give feedback, I really value your opinion. I'm gonna go back and re-record the strings section and see if I can sync it up better, make it quieter too.

I know what you mean. I used to use a crappy notation software that had a similar problem with the strings. Anyway, hopefully you can make it work here. Best of luck.
